Bringing My Baby Home - What Can I expect?

Some random thoughts from Choosey Diapers, your cloth diaper resource.

  1. Everyone will want to see and hold your baby as soon as you bring her/him home.
  2. Baby will get fussy from all of the holding and attention.
  3. When baby sleeps you will barely be able to tell if she/he is breathing.
  4. You will get up the first few nights and listen and touch your baby to make sure he/she is breathing.
  5. The baby could wake up 3 to 5 times or more during the night to eat. The baby will probably need to be about 12 pounds before it will sleep 6 hours.
  6. You will be incredibly tired after the first 2 or 3 days.
  7. Your friends with babies and small children will come see your baby. The small children will want to hold the baby. If you let them, you will hold your breath.
  8. You will get lots of advice.
  9. If you get post-partum blues, it is natural and common. It is okay to ask for help.
  10. You might be really happy, but if you feel like crying it is okay. It is the blues.
  11. After a few days you will want to take your baby out and resume life as you knew it before the baby. You will find you need to adjust your life to the care of the baby more than you thought.
  12. When the baby cries you might be conflicted about wanting to pick him/her up. Should you comfort him/her or try and teach him/her to not cry very much will be your decision.
  13. You will love the new baby smell.
  14. You will have to get used to the smell of dirty diapers.
  15. Your world will revolve around the new baby.
